Schafberg (1782m)
Visit rate: 5/5 / Rating: 3/5
The famous Schafberg peak offers perhaps the best views of the Salzkammergut, surrounded by 3 lakes with blue water and the mighty Alps in the background. There are also a couple of A/B ferratas. In general, this is a relaxing hiking spot suitable for everyone.
You can hike to the top or take a train ride on the steepest train track in Austria. I bought a ticket to the Schafbergalm intermediate stop, but rode all the way up, no one checked me and I saved about 15 euros thanks to it. Also you save some euros if you scan the QR code of your ticket at the parking machine, you will automatically get a 4 or 6 euro discount on parking fees in 2024.
I took the very first train up at 9:15, so I was more or less the very first one up, I liked the photos of the cloudy sea at first, but I got nothing from the views. The Schafberg rock formation offers some very photogenic spots, but they were all under a cloud in my case so bad luck.
The clouds receded as the day progressed, but I didn't feel like going back to the top, so I rested for an hour at the top of Aigneriiedel (1326m), took a few photos and took the train back down to the parking.
