Roßkopf - D

08/07/2024

Elevation: 540m / Lenght: 800m
Approach: 1h / Duration: 2-5h
Rating: 5/5

This place is a ferratas and hiking paradise. I highly recommend everyone to go to Lake Achensee, take the 28 euro cable car up the mountains and climb all 5 local ferratas or walk the hiking trails.

For my friend Lucas, the word ferrata was still relatively new, so we chose the easiest one with difficulty B/C to the top of Haidachstellwand (2192m) to warm up. Note, the correct direction of ascent is from the Grubalacke lake.

I wanted to climb something a bit crazier, so I chose the ferrata right opposite to the summit of Roßkopf (2259m). According to the topo, it is C/D difficulty, but personally I would classify it more as D and it is completely unsuitable for beginners. I would rank it for me as one of the most difficult climbs ever. It is a fairly perpendicular climb up the wall, I would say longer than 100 meters. Towards the end my blood was starting to stiffen in my veins and by then I thought my fear of heights had largely left me.

The views at the top are incredible, the local scenery was reminiscent of the Italian Seceda. I would have loved to continue on to the next ferrata but we ran out of water, 1 litre really isn't enough. Never mind, at least I have a reason to come back here again sometime.

In our case, the whole trip looked like a big disappointment at first, because it was in the clouds from the cable car almost to the mountain plain, but in the end these incredible photos and great experiences are the result. I'll repeat myself, you want to visit this place whether you climb or not.

I recommend to cool down in the Achensee lake afterwards, the water is crystal clear and also pretty icy.
