A strategic place to stay is for sure the town of Baunei. It has just under 3,500 inhabitants and in the low season it is exactly the quiet place we were looking for. You can walk through the town in no time, but you can easily get lost in the narrow streets, admiring the views of the beautiful mountainous landscape or the Tyrrhenian Sea. There are a few restaurants and two small stores with typical Italian opening hours, only in the morning and in the early evening.
In the off-season, especially in the smaller, non-tourist towns, you have to take into account that the Italians (or rather the Sardinians) don't care much about tourists and you have to adapt to the locals rhythm of life. The opening times on Google, for example, often do not correspond to reality. In our case, the restaurant was only open at noon on weekdays. But if the football was being played or locals are going in the church - suddenly the whole Italy was on its feet. From June to September, however, I believe you won't encounter this problem and the opening hours will mostly match what is listed on Google.
For example, during our visit, only about 5% of the tables in the restaurant were occupied at noon, which probably corresponded to the sales. No wonder they are only open for 2 hours a day. However, we were perfectly happy with that, we wanted peace and quiet to wander around the area and that was fulfilled to perfection. However, it was quite cold outside in the evenings (around 10°) and it took quite a while to heat the apartment to a comfortable temperature.
Around the village there are several viewpoints easily accessible by car. Among the best ones is definitely Su Sclaradorgiu Santu Franciscu. Visibility to the south and the weather tends to be good most of the time, as the town is just on the edge of the national park. The weather in the Golfo di Orosei e del Gennargentu National Park is quite changeable with frequent cloud cover and telephone signals are often difficult to find.
In the middle of the national park, on the way along the panoramic mountain road, you can stop at a viewpoint overlooking the famous Gorropu Canyon. Another viewpoint worth mentioning is the Monte Lopene, which, like many other resting places, offers really nice views.
